Only 17 migrants and refugees arrive at Piraeus on Monday

Only 17 migrants and asylum seekers arrived at Greece’s biggest port of Piraeus near Athens on Monday as the flow of people from Turkey appears to drop.

According to official data, 5,330 people are currently staying at the makeshift camp in the port.

The European Union and Ankara struck a deal earlier this month aiming to cut off the sea crossing from Turkey to the islands, which bore the brunt of a refugee wave last year.

An average 996 refugees have arrived in Greece every day in March compared to an average 1,968 in February, according to UNHCR.

More than 100,000 people crossed the Mediterranean Sea in the first two months of 2016 alone.
