Government lifts 4-year freeze on promotions

The leftist-led government has lifted a four-year freeze on promotions in the state sector after introducing legislation severing connection to pay hikes.

Deputy Minister for Administrative Reform Christoforos Vernardakis has issued a circular to all public sector departments detailing the procedures that each must follow in deciding promotions by April.

The revised rankings will be key in selecting 81 general directors, 383 directors and 1,384 heads of departments by the end of this year.

Lifting the freeze on promotions was part of Greece's international bailout obligations.
