Dangerous pattern

COMMENT

Officials of the SYRIZA-led administration seem to think that they can ignore problems until they just disappear. It has been a pattern since they came to power.

It can be seen happening again at the makeshift migrant and refugee camps at Piraeus port and Idomeni, near Greece’s northern border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The Greek authorities allowed the migrant crisis to spin out of control until it became a potential risk for the country. Now they are afraid to impose a solution and are instead behaving as if the problem will disappear with time.

Various government spokespersons keep announcing imaginary deadlines – which they then fail to meet.

The reluctance of a political administration which started out with the idea of an open-border policy is perhaps something that can be explained. But it can by no means be justified.
