Tensions flare at Piraeus Port as migrants refuse to evacuate makeshift camp

TAGS: Migration

Tensions flared at the Port of Piraeus, south of Athens, on Wednesday after authorities informed migrants and refugees who have for weeks found temporary shelter outside a passenger terminal that they will be transported to purpose-built camps near the capital.

Several people held a sit-in protest at the dock demanding the opening of the country’s northern border.

According to reports, a protester threatened to throw a baby at Greek coast guard officials after they tried to stop him from smashing a parked vehicle. The baby was eventually returned safe to its mother, reports said.

More than 4,700 migrants and refugees have been camping out at the port. The vast majority have been reluctant to move to organized camps fearing that it will mean more restrictions.
