Government abandons private schools plan, again

TAGS: Education

Plans to restrict extracurricular activities and tutoring at private schools have been abandoned for a second time by the government.

The Education Ministry was expected to include an article that aimed to force private schools to offer no more services than public institutions in a bill submitted to Parliament Monday. However, the draft legislation submitted to the House did not include the article.

This was the second time that the government stepped back from trying to implement restrictions on private schools. It had announced exactly the same initiative in March 2015 but ended up abandoning its plans after Greece’s lenders exerted pressure on the SYRIZA-Independent Greeks coalition.
