First student inmate gets fitted with monitoring bracelet

A 32-year-old prisoner was on Wednesday fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet that will allow him to attend classes at Athens Technical College (TEI).

The 32-year-old is the first college student to be fitted with such a bracelet since an amendment permitting prisoners to visit college campuses as long as they wear a monitoring device was passed in December 2014 following a prolonged hunger strike by anarchist Nikos Romanos, a TEI student.

Romanos’s release has been postponed amid discussion about the terms of his release.

Similar bracelets have also been fitted on two defendants linked to the embezzlement scandal involving electricity providers Hellas Power and Energa.
