Gov’t defense council discusses Greek response to Turkish violations

The Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) convened on Friday, under Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, to discuss Greece's response to an increase in violations of Greek air space in the Aegean by Turkish aircraft.

"Greece is defending its sovereign rights in a decisive, responsible and sober manner, on the basis of the stable and solid deterrent capabilities of the Greek Armed Forces," KYSEA said in a statement.

The meeting came just two days after Athens lodged complaints with Ankara over a series of air space violations in the Aegean carried by Turkish aircraft, including flights close to Lesvos, which is struggling to deal with an influx of refugees from Turkey.

According to sources, Greek diplomatic sources stressed to Turkish authorities that aggressive flights by Turkish fighter jets over Greek islands pose a risk of serious accidents as well as undermining attempts to create a climate of mutual trust between the two countries.
