Probe busts Athens metro staff ticket scam

A group of Athens metro employees swindled the company out of millions of euros by pocketing ticket sales, according to an internal investigation carried out by STASY, the company that manages fixed-track modes of public transport in the capital.

The ring members operated by withdrawing large numbers of tickets, purportedly due to flaws, and selling them separately to metro customers at ticket booths, Kathimerini understands.

It is unclear when the metro employees launched their scam and how much they made from it but sources indicated that losses for STASY are estimated to amount to around 15 million euros annually.

According to the report, the metro staff amended records of ticket sales and enlisted the help of cleaning staff to dispose of certain documents in a bid to cover their tracks.
