Jordanian queen to visit refugee camp on Greek island

Queen Rania of Jordan is expected in Greece next week, where she will visit a refugee camp on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos.

The queen is coming to Greece on the invitation of the humanitarian group International Rescue Committee and is expected to visit the Kara Tepe camp, where hundreds of migrants and refugees are awaiting processing under a deal between the European Union and Turkey, Greek daily Naftemporiki reported on Tuesday.

Queen Rania’s visit will come a few days after Pope Francis traveled to the same island with Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios and Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the Church of Greece, on Saturday.

The plight of thousands of migrants and refugees trapped in Greece after the country’s northern neighbors sealed their borders has drawn the attention of several international celebrities, including actresses Vanessa Redgrave, Susan Sarandon and Angelina Jolie, also a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and Chinese visual artist Ai Weiwei.
