Traffic disruptions ahead of Olympic flame handover ceremony

TAGS: Transport

Traffic will be diverted and roads will be closed off in the capital Wednesday as the Olympic Flame makes its way from the Acropolis Museum – where it stayed overnight Tuesday – to the Panathenaic Stadium, the venue of the first modern Games in 1896, where it will be handed over, in a special ceremony, to organizers of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This will be the final Greek leg of the Flame’s journey that began last week with the lighting ceremony in Olympia, site of the ancient Olympics, and will end in Rio in time for the opening ceremony on August 5.

Police said traffic along the route will be diverted or closed off and parking will be prohibited.

The measures will take effect at 1.30 p.m. and will impact major thoroughfares such as Panepistimiou, Amalias, Stadiou, Academias, Vassileos Constantinou and other central roads.

Drivers are advised to avoid driving or parking on these streets and avenues.
