Opposition urges ‘incompetent’ PM to resign after talks with lenders hit deadlock
Hours after talks between international creditors and the government in Athens hit a fresh deadlock, conservative opposition vice president Adonis Georgiadis called for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's resignation to stop extra austerity measures being imposed on Greece.
“Tsipras must quit right now so that we avoid additional measures,” Georgiadis told Antenna TV Wednesday adding that lack of faith in the government was driving lenders to demand additional austerity measures from Athens.
“Tsipras is an incompetent premier,” the former health minister said. “He cannot even tie his shoelaces.”
Greece and its lenders were unable on Tuesday to reach an agreement on how to line up 3.6 billion euros in contingent austerity measures, leading to plans for an extra meeting of eurozone finance ministers on Thursday being dropped.
A spokesman for Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem confirmed on Tuesday night that there would be no meeting this week to rubber-stamp an agreement between Athens and the institutions and conclude the first review of the third Greek bailout program.
