VAT hike increases hotel rates around Greece

Online rates for Greek hotels in May are showing a 9.8 percent increase compared to a year earlier, Trivago data showed on Tuesday, with an average rate of 90 euros per double room per night.

The main reason for this rise is the increase in the value-added tax imposed on hotel accommodation, from 6.5 percent last year to 13 percent this year.

Hotels on Zakynthos are showing a 14.6 percent hike and Myconos (pictured) 12.5 percent.

However, Athens hotels are showing a 4.3 percent decline year-on-year to an average rate of 110 euros.
