New Democracy is looking to renew from September its drive to convince voters that it is a better option to the current coalition, party sources have told Kathimerini.

The cohesion of the SYRIZA-Independent Greeks parliamentary group during the recent vote on pension and income tax reforms highlighted, as far as the conservatives are concerned, that there is no immediate prospect of the government collapsing.

Therefore, rather than pushing for snap elections, ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will focus his efforts on targeting voters in areas where support for SYRIZA has been strong recently. Last week, he visited the working class Athens suburb of Peristeri, for instance.

He will also work over the next few months on detailing the party’s policy program, which he will present at the Thessaloniki International Fair. The party believes that voter discontent with the government may grow by that time and that the coalition may run into complications with Greece’s lenders over the issue of debt relief.
