Minister sees smaller election bonus for winning party, not proportional representation

The change to the electoral law the government is working in would see the winning party (or coalition) gain a 30-seat – rather than 50-seat – bonus, Interior Minister Panayiotis Kouroublis said on Monday.

Kouroublis said that the government is also examining the possibility of introducing a more representative electoral system at a local and regional level but ruled out the possibility of proportional representation being adopted even though SYRIZA favored such a system in the past.

The minister said that “the country would never be governed” if proportional representation is brought in.

He added that the government is also looking at allowing Greeks to vote from the age of 17, rather than 18, and for the vast Athens “B” constituency to be broken up.
