Tsakalotos, Houliarakis brief SYRIZA MPs on new multi bill

Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and Alternate Finance Minister Giorgos Houliarakis were on Wednesday briefing SYRIZA MPs on a new multi bill of reforms that the House must vote by Sunday in order for Athens to secure more loans from creditors.

Prime Minister and SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras was present at the parliamentary group meeting, according to reports.

The new bill to be submitted Wednesday is expected to include a raft of tax hikes, including raising consumer tax from 23 percent to 24 percent, increasing taxes on fuel, hotel stays, alcohol and tobacco as well as new rules for non-performing loans. It is also expected to include details on a contingency mechanism for automatically cutting state spending if Greece misses certain fiscal targets.

The vote is expected to pass as none of the coalition’s 153 MPs has indicated they will oppose it.

Eurozone finance ministers are due to meet next Tuesday, May 24 to discuss whether Athens has made enough progress on reforms required under its third international bailout for more rescue loan funds to be released.
