Four officials of Church NGO charged with swindling state funds

A prosecutor on Thursday leveled charges of embezzlement, breach of faith and making false statements against four members of the Church of Greece’s charity Allilegii, or Solidarity.

The four suspects include a close aide to the late Archbishop Christodoulos and officials tasked with overseeing the Church’s finances.

The case concerns the alleged embezzlement or mismanagement of 5.6 million euros in funds given to the Church by the Foreign Ministry for use in charity activities such as the delivery of food to Iraq and other war zones in the period between 2005 and 2006.

According to the prosecutor’s investigation, the activities in question were either not carried out at all or left incomplete.
