Deal signed to increase transparency at Greek prisons

Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos and Ombudsman Vassilis Karydis signed an agreement on Thursday aimed at improving transparency and the level of oversight at Greek jails.

Among other things, the pact will see an exchange of know-how, the launch of several pilot schemes, the training of prison staff and the conducting of joint public awareness campaigns.

“Improving transparency in prisons is not only a tool to combat corruption but also a basic element to fight violence and lawlessness,” said Paraskevopoulos.

The ministry is hoping that the agreement with the Ombudsman will become part of a wider range of actions aimed at improving transparency and accountability at Greece’s jails. Other measures include strengthening the body of prison inspectors and financial checks by the Court of Audit.
