Opposition MPs demand answers about Venezuela’s ex-ambassador

Seventy MPs from New Democracy, PASOK and To Potami on Thursday submitted a written request in Parliament for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to provide more information regarding what he knew of sexual harassment allegations against Venezuela’s former ambassador to Greece.

The lawmakers demanded that Tsipras confirm whether, as opposition leader, he wrote to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in 2013 about the claims against the then ambassador, Franklin Gonzalez.

Tsipras is alleged to have informed Maduro that embassy staff, who allegedly were on the receiving end of Gonzalez’s harassment, had shown “political maturity” by not drawing attention to the matter.

The deputies also asked why Tsipras did not inform authorities about the claims if he was aware of them and whether he is now prepared to take action to ensure that the former envoy is brought before Greek justice.

Earlier this week, government officials argued that the Foreign Ministry had been aware of the allegations in 2013, when SYRIZA was the main opposition party.
