EC approves 56 million euros in emergency aid for Greek migrant effort

The European Commission announced on Friday that it had approved 56 million euros in emergency funding to improve conditions for the hosting of migrants and refugees in Greece.

Of the funding, 30 million euros is to go toward boosting the work in Greece of the the United Nations refugee agency. Another 13 million euros are going to the Greek office of the International Organization for Migration for supporting the most vulnerable migrants in Greece.

The final tranche of 13 million euros will be split between the Interior Ministry, the Administrative Reform Ministry and Greece's state asylum service to boost the efficiency of the asylum processing system which is currently laborious.

Since the beginning of 2015, the EC has disbursed 237 million euros in the form of emergency funding for the Greek government and non-governmental organizations working in Greece for refugees and migrants.
