Court to hear first case against TV license tender
The Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, is due to hear an appeal by Mega Channel on June 17 against the government’s decision to launch a tender for just four national TV licenses for broadcasting via the digital network. The hearing will take place behind closed doors.
Mega is just one of several TV channels that have appealed against the tender. It argues that the decision to limit the number of permits is not compatible with European legislation and that preventing the National Council for Radio and Television from having oversight of the process goes against the Greek Constitution.
The government launched the tender last week, inviting interested parties to submit their bids by July 4. The government is then due to select the bidders that will qualify for the auction, which will be held between August 12 and 17.
The starting price for each license will be 3 million euros.
