Panel calls for ban on prayers at schools

A government committee has proposed the abolition of student marches on national holidays and compulsory prayers at the beginning of the school day, provoking the anger of the Church of Greece.

A list of proposals by the Committee of National and Social Dialogue on Education is to be discussed on Friday during a meeting of educationalists to be chaired by Education Minister Nikos Filis.

Other proposals include the removal of religious studies from the list of compulsory subjects on the senior high school syllabus, which would thereafter only feature English and Greek language and literature.

The meeting will also consider a 110-page report prepared by Parliament’s Educational Affairs Committee.
