Prep work needed
A fresh scenario regarding new, out-of-control flows of refugees and migrants entering Greece cannot be discarded at this point.
Relations between the European Union and Turkey are reaching a pivotal point. At the same time, a recent deal signed by Brussels and Ankara stipulating the return of migrants from Greece to Turkey does not appear to be working out in a satisfactory manner in practice.
However, the problem right now is that Greece’s northern borders are currently closed, a development tolerated by the government. Each new wave of refugees and migrants, therefore, would end up being trapped somewhere inside the country.
Meanwhile, the fate of the EU-Turkey agreement will become clearer within the next few weeks. What is certain is that, one way or another, Greece must be prepared for all possible outcomes.
