Education minister slams ‘ghost teachers’

TAGS: Education

Education Minister Nikos Filis on Friday slammed Greek teachers, the country’s administrative machine and former education ministers who up until last year, he said, tolerated the phenomenon of people being hired to teach at public schools who then rarely if ever entered a classroom.

Speaking in Parliament, Filis said there were teacher surpluses in certain subjects which were hidden behind a system of clientelism.

“We are hiring substitutes to do the job which is not carried out by permanent staff,” said the minister, who spoke of “permanent ‘parked’ teaching staff,” in response to a question tabled by Greek Communist Party (KKE) deputy Yiannis Delis.
