Greece finishes third in water polo’s World League

The Greek men’s national water polo team finished third in the FINA World League on Sunday as it followed up its semifinal loss to the US in the penalties with a comeback win over Italy in the third-place playoff in China.

Always among the world’s superpowers in the sport, Greece thrashed the hosts 15-5 in the quarterfinals and narrowly missed out on a place in Sunday’s final.

The Saturday semi with the US ended 11-11 and was decided in the shootout. Greece lost 17-16 after the penalties, but made sure it left China grabbing a place on the podium on Sunday.

Italy led Greece in the match for the third spot, but the Greeks came back to win 11-7, showing they are well prepared for this August Olympic Games in Rio.
