Cyprus ‘killer’ had been jailed in Greece three times

TAGS: Crime

Greek police are very familiar with a fugitive wanted by Cypriot authorities over a deadly shooting last week in the resort town of Ayia Napa. Aleks Burelli, a 48-year-old Albanian national, is believed to be one of two gunmen paid to execute casino owner Phanos Kalopsidiotis, 51.

Two friends accompanying the businessman, a married couple, were also killed. The second assailant, Jani Vogli, 41, also Albanian, died in an exchange of fire with an off-duty policeman, who later also died of his injuries.

Authorities in Athens on Monday said that Burelli has been jailed three times in Greece from 2006 to 2013 for various offenses ranging from kidnapping, blackmail, drug possession and shooting at police.
