Recipe for chaos

After taking full advantage of the 50-parliamentary seat bonus granted under the existing electoral law to the political party that comes first in a general election, the government is now trying to change the rules with new proposals to be presented to lawmakers.

The new law being put forward calls for a simple representational system, which would abolish any advantages to the first party, as well as for the voting age to be reduced from 18 to 17.

The objective of the move is transparent, even though it is badly veiled behind arguments ostensibly in support of the next Parliament being a better representation of the people’s will and also in favor of giving a political role to a younger generation. The truth is that SYRIZA is preparing for an electoral defeat and it wants to prevent the formation of a government by the main opposition party, disregarding the dangers of Greece finding itself in a period of limbo with no government at all. In short, it is sacrificing everything on the altar of petty party interests, even though the country is at breaking point.
