Suspects in Athens armed robbery wanted for other crimes, police say

Two of three suspects arrested after allegedly holding up a supermarket and threatening to shoot at police officers on Monday afternoon in the Athens neighborhood of Ambelokipi, are wanted for other crimes, investigators said on Tuesday.

The three men allegedly entered the local Sklavenitis supermarket on busy Panormou Street shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday and threatened cashiers with guns. They were trying to make off in a taxi after taking an unspecified amount of cash from the tills when they were pursued by motorcycle-riding DIAS officers.

Two of the suspects wielded their guns at the officers, who opened fire, injuring the third man in the stomach.

The injured man claims to be Palestinian and is currently being treated at a local hospital. The other two suspects are wanted for robbery and drug-related offences.
