Rally called at Syntagma Square on Tuesday to mark referendum anniversary

Civil servants’ union ADEDY has called a rally at Syntagma Square in downtown Athens at 7 p.m. on Tuesday to mark one year since Greeks were called upon to vote on a third bailout deal from creditors.

ADEDY has called for mass participation to protest the government’s turnaround in signing the deal after 61.3 percent of voters rejected a proposal from creditors in the summer of 2015.

The union is accusing the coalition government of failing to respect the popular mandate by implementing measures that are detrimental to workers’ rights and prospects.

A separate rally will be held at the same time at Omonia Square, with protesters marching to the European Union offices on Vassilissis Sofias Street, to the prime minister’s office at the Maximos Mansion and then to Syntagma.

The rallies are expected to cause major traffic disruptions in the city center.
