Unknown vandals have damaged a device that allows wheelchair users to move in and out of the sea on the Ionian island of Cephalonia.
The Seatrac device, which operates on a fixed-track mechanism powered by solar energy, was installed on Skala beach, on the island’s southern coast, only a week ago.
Speaking to local media on Thursday, deputy regional governor Panayis Dragoulokonas said that unknown individuals had vandalized the Seatrac as well as the accessible toilet on the same beach.
“It’s a shame. Whoever is behind this is a despicable person,” he said.
Created by a team of Greek scientists in 2008, the Seatrac system is covered by European and US patent laws. Several devices have been installed across Greece and Cyprus.
