Businessman, defense officials to stand trial

A council of appeals court judges on Thursday called for 17 people, including former senior defense officials, to stand trial in connection with the acquisition of an electronic defense system from businessman Thomas Liakounakos.

The entrepreneur is among those who are to stand trial. He was remanded in custody last year but has since been granted pretrial release on a series of conditions including his wearing a security bracelet.

Former Defense Ministry officials Antonis Kantas, Giorgos Koliris and Evangelos Vasilakos are among those facing criminal charges of breach of faith.

According to prosecutors, Liakounakos’s company SONAK received a 35-million-euro commission on behalf of the Greek state but failed to deliver the electronic defense system.
