Undermining stability
For some years now, Greece has been on the brink of being ungovernable and if the government gets its way in the electoral reform by imposing a simple proportional system there is a serious risk that the situation will spin out of control.
Such a move would allow powerful and non-transparent interests to manipulate the political game and the government with a much freer hand. Moreover, the political system is already very fragmented and will be unable to sustain any stability or to form any sort of sustainable government.
If the government wanted to make some meaningful changes to Greece’s electoral law it could start by breaking up larger constituencies into smaller ones and having some MPs elected without voters putting a cross next to their name. But these would obviously not serve the cynical and tactical targets of a government that is willing to sacrifice everything just to stay in power.
