Tents erected, locks forced as unauthorized event begins at Aristotle university

A group of about 150 people allegedly participating in an unauthorized event on the migration crisis erected tents on the premises of the Aristotle University campus in the northern port city of Thessaloniki on Thursday.

According to reports, unidentified individuals also requested permission to enter the law school on Thursday. When this was denied by the university’s authorities, on grounds of safety concerns, the individuals allegedly forced the locks and entered the building.

The individuals were allegedly taking part in the so-called No Border Camp Thessaloniki 2016, a movement reportedly originating in Frankfurt, which subsequently developed online.

Earlier in the week, the university’s concerns regarding the unauthorized event were communicated in a letter to the prime minister’s office and the ministries of Citizens’ Protection and Education.

According to reports, the organizers were expecting between 2,000 to 3,000 people from Greece and other European countries to take part in the event.
