Greek among the dead in Munich shootings, ministry confirms

The Greek Foreign Ministry confirmed on Saturday that a Greek was among the nine people killed in Munich on Friday when a local teenager went on a shooting rampage.

“The impact of yesterday’s tragic attack at the Olympia shopping mall in Munich sadly includes a Greek citizen among the innocent victims,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the victim was male. Reports suggested that he was an 18-year-old from northern Greece.

“Greece’s general consul in Munich is taking all appropriate action in coordination with the relevant German authorities,” the Foreign Ministry’s statement said.

Three Turkish citizens were also among the dead at the mall shooting, which was carried out by an 18-year-old German of Iranian descent.

According to Munich police, the gunman, who wounded more than a dozen others before killing himself, was obsessed with mass shootings.

Initial investigations suggest the Munich-born suspect had suffered from psychological problems and had received treatment. “We express our abhorrence at and unequivocal condemnation of the deadly attack on the Olympia shopping mall in Munich,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in the wake of the attack. “Our thoughts are with the German people and with the families of the victims, to whom we express our condolences.”
