Examination of Turkish asylum requests postponed

The eight Turkish military officers who escaped to Greece by helicopter following the recent coup attempt in the neighboring country were on Wednesday given extra time to prepare their cases for political asylum, Kathimerini understands.

Asylum interview dates have been rescheduled for 19, 23, 24 and 25 of August.

Ankara says that the officers’ applications for political asylum in Greece should be rejected and wants them extradited to Turkey to stand trial as “traitors.”

The eight, who insist they were not involved in the coup attempt, say the would be in danger if returned to Turkey amid President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s widespread purges of the military and civil service.
