Rouvikonas leader faces trial after embassy attack

TAGS: Crime

A man believed to be a leading member of the anarchist group Rouvikonas (Rubicon) has been charged with vandalism and refusing to be fingerprinted after allegedly participating in an attack on the Turkish Embassy in Athens on Tuesday.

The suspect, who was not identified, faces trial on both charges before a misdemeanors court.

Police questioned 11 people following the attack on the embassy, during which assailants splashed red and black paint across the building’s entrance and threw flyers protesting a crackdown in Turkey following a failed coup in the neighboring country.

Rouvikonas has been linked to numerous acts of vandalism including smashing ticket machines at the Athens metro, firebombing police stations and damaging the offices of the state privatization agency, TAIPED.
