Government spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili on Monday condemned an arson attack in the early hours of the morning against a church in central Athens, the Moni Petraki, which houses the central offices of the Church of Greece's Holy Synod.

The attack is "abhorrent," Gerovasili said, noting that efforts were underway to find the perpetrators.

"Religious freedom, as enshrined in the Constitution, and the unhindered practice of religious worship are strictly protected by the State and no act of violence against them can be tolerated," she said.

The attack occurred at 3.10 a.m. when unidentified assailants threw four Molotov cocktails into the yard of the building which detonated, destroying two cars that had been parked outside.
