The delay in efforts to reverse the negative impact on Greece’s image as a tourist destination, sparked by the refugee crisis, has had a serious impact on camping tourism from abroad. According to the president of the Panhellenic Camping Association, Costas Papadopoulos, camper arrivals – in particular, from Germany, France and Italy – have so far plunged to the tune of 30 percent compared to 2015. Figures for Greek campers, however, remained at last year’s levels. Greece has 297 campsites with an accommodation capacity of 80,783 people. Papadopoulos also bemoaned the toll taken on campsites by free camping.
