A 22-year-old man who is accused of punching Athens Traffic Police chief Giorgos Diamantopoulos in the head in late August following a pro-migrant protest by anarchists in the city center, handed himself in to police in Drapetsona, a suburb of Piraeus, on Friday.

The suspect was granted conditional release and is to be summoned by an investigating magistrate in the coming days.

Diamantopoulos was briefly hospitalized following the assault, which occurred after a group of self-styled anarchists approached him, ostensibly to ask him a question about the rally, before one of their number broke away from the group and attacked him.
