Archbishop: ‘Greece and Orthodoxy not for sale’

Amid growing tension between the Church of Greece and the government over changes to the way religion is taught at schools, Archbishop Ieronymos said on Friday that there are “some who do not love their country and want to de-Hellenize it, and some who don’t love the Church and want to de-Christianize it.”

Speaking to children at a Church-run campsite in Avlona, northeastern Attica, Ieronymos urged them to love their country and the Orthodox faith, stressing that “Greece and Orthodoxy are not for sale.”

He insisted that it is incumbent on all to hand over to the next generations an appreciation of their country and Orthodoxy.

“History shows that whoever went up against these two lost,” he said.
