Hearse driver loses coffin

The coffin of a man in the region of Ilia in the Peloponnese was temporarily lost on Saturday after the driver of the hearse lost control of the vehicle on his way to the funeral while under the influence of alcohol.

The coffin, and the corpse contained within, apparently slid out of the car.

The panic-stricken driver and his co-driver, reportedly inebriated after knocking down a few glasses of tsipouro – a powerful grape distillate – while on the job, could not find the coffin.

It was eventually found, broken, in a field off the road.

The incident caused scenes of acrimony between relatives and the funeral service company officials.
