WWII mine found on Skopelos

An active mine dating back to World War II was found by a tourist off the coast of the Aegean island of Skopelos, local authorities announced on Saturday.

The mine had apparently been discovered by the tourist while the latter was diving at a distance of 70 meters from the beach of Loutraki some 40 days ago, authorities said. Demining teams from the Greek military, who were called to the scene, were unable to deactivate it because it was close to undersea power cables that provide the entire island with electricity.

Local authorities have asked state power company (DEH) to remove the cables to another area so that the mine can be deactivated.
