The Erdogan message
The interpretation that a recent statement made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which he questioned the Treaty of Lausanne signed in 1923, was made exclusively for Turkish consumption with the principal aim of undermining the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, is not easily acceptable.
What sets alarm bells ringing – and rightly so – is the fact that the statement focused on the Aegean islands, whereas the actual treaty had to do with all of Turkey’s current borders.
The most likely scenario is that Ankara is putting issues on the table in view of future developments within NATO and the European Union, while at the same time sending out messages in different directions regarding their reactions in case of the creation of a Kurdish state.
As far as Greece is concerned, the necessity for prudence, vigilance and regrouping is becoming increasingly pressing.
