Greek islands see 280 migrant arrivals in one day
Greek authorities on Tuesday continued to record an uptick in migrant and refugee arrivals from neighboring Turkey, after the islands of the Eastern Aegean saw 280 landings in a single day.
Official figures published on Tuesday indicated that there are currently 14,581 migrants staying at island facilities designed to accommodate just 7,450, raising concerns about a resurgence of tensions both inside the over-crowded camps and with local communities demanding measures to relocate camp residents to facilities on the Greek mainland.
The island of Lesvos is hosting the biggest number of refugees and migrants with 5,955, followed by Chios with 4,047, Kos with 1,864 and Samos with 1,704.
The total number of migrants currently trapped in Greece as European Union member-states resist relocation efforts, was put on Tuesday at 60,960.
