Pavlopoulos insists on ‘self-evident right’ to seek war reparations from Germany
President Prokopis Pavlopoulos has insisted that Greece has a “self-evident right” to seek war reparations from Germany due to the Nazi occupation during World War II.
Speaking at an event marking the liberation of Athens from the Nazis on Thursday evening, Pavlopoulos said that Greece was justified in seeking reparations for damages incurred during the second World War and for a forced loan taken out by the Axis powers.
The subject, which sorely tested Greek-German ties last year, has been raised repeatedly by the leftist- led government, which set up an intra-party parliamentary committee to prepare a report on war reparations.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has vowed to exhaust all diplomatic and, if necessary, legal means to win reparations.
Germany, however, has rejected these claims saying the question has been conclusively dealt with, legally and politically.
