Another four Turkish officers’ asylum claims rejected

Four more asylum requests filed by the eight Turkish soldiers who fled to Greece a day after the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July, were rejected on Tuesday by a court of first instance. One of them has reportedly lodged an appeal.

The ruling follows the decision by the Asylum Service to throw out the applications of two others and the rejection of another in September, bringing the total the number of applications Greece has turned down to seven. A decision is pending for the eighth applicant.

Turkey is seeking the extradition of all the soldiers – three majors, three captains and two sergeant majors – for their alleged role in the July 15 coup attempt. All have denied the accusation and claim their lives will be put at risk if they are extradited to Turkey.
