Cavusoglu plays down doubting of Lausanne Treaty
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu suggested on Wednesday that Ankara intends to abide by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, which decided the sovereignty of many Aegean islands, despite President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent criticism of the agreement.
“All countries have to abide by their international agreements and treaties, whether they like or not,” Cavusoglu said in response to a question from New Democracy MP Dora Bakoyannis at the Council of Europe.
“That does not mean that someone cannot express their opinion about how correct or justified these agreements were,” added Cavusoglu in reference to Erdogan suggesting that the 1923 treaty was a defeat for Turkey.
