Opposition parties call for Varoufakis inquiry
Opposition parties have stepped up calls for former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis to face official scrutiny over his time in office after the economist confirmed that he described his country as bankrupt in a meeting with European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.
“As the finance minister of a bankrupt country, I traveled (economy class) to Frankfurt with the aim of convincing the ECB president that reducing the public debt was a precondition of recovery,” said Varoufakis, in response to comments by Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras earlier this week.
New Democracy secretary Lefteris Avgenakis reacted by repeating the party’s promise to hold an investigation, if it comes to power, into the decisions taken by the SYRIZA-led coalition in the first six months of 2015.
PASOK MP Andreas Loverdos claimed that Varoufakis overstepped his authority as a minister, which is deemed a felony. To Potami lawmaker Dimitris Tsiodras called on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who appointed Varoufakis, to explain the actions of a man he had referred to as an “asset” for his country.
