Parents’ protests against refugees at school probed
A prosecutor has launched a preliminary investigation to assess whether anti-racism laws are being violated in the village of Profitis, near Thessaloniki, where several parents are protesting against the attendance of refugee and migrant children at the local primary school.
Refugee and migrant children are attending schools across the country as part of a government education program which began on Monday, but there have been isolated cases in which parents have opposed the move, including Profitis, where local children are not showing up at school due to an “embargo” by parents.
According to judicial sources, the investigation will also examine whether the public display of opposition, through violence, statements, rallies and other means, is racially motivated and whether it could pose a threat to public order.
