Slippery path to nowhere

Recent developments indicate that the country is going through a serious institutional crisis.

Sure, the phenomenon is not unique to the Greece of today. Other governments have in the past sought to manipulate state institutions or even control the state apparatus in order to advance their own undemocratic objectives. These regimes were acting under the delusion that tactical machinations would secure their long-term (if not permanent) stay in power.

That said, Greece’s SYRIZA-led administration has crossed certain red lines that had never before been challenged in the years following the restoration of democracy.

Experience shows that machinations of this sort tend to backfire and the government should cease with this approach starting now.

Should it try to break the deadlock it finds itself in with new schemes, the government will only dig itself into a deeper hole and further damage the nation’s institutions.

It’s a path to nowhere; and it’s a very slippery one.
