Retired officer remanded over fatal Athens shooting

A retired police officer was remanded in custody on Tuesday for the murder of a gym owner in Ambelokipi, central Athens, last Friday.

The 60-year-old was arrested after turning himself in on Saturday and confessing to the fatal shooting of the 68-year-old businessman.

According to reports, the retired policeman claimed that he opened fire in self-defense after the victim allegedly attacked him with an aluminum pipe and a wooden shield on Panormou Street.

He said the altercation began over the installation of cameras on the gym’s exterior.
